On Wednesday December 14th 2011, the fourth We Eat Poets event takes place at LASSCo in Vauxhall. My editors have been working closely with the We Eat Poets team, and to mark the occasion have commissioned and made up this set of six greetings cards, each featuring a poem based on a character from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol: Scrooge, Marley, Fred, Fezziwig, Tiny Tim and the Ghost of Christmas Present. The cards each come, naturally enough, with their own envelope for formal gifting purposes. Expect no less from the benevolent Dr Fulminare!
Fezziwig's Christmas Overture
It is, Iím told, entirely plausible that to seem
is to be. So we must, dear lady wife, in this room
forged with cake and dancing, fogged with the night
and its milkman guests, its paperboys and cook,
and our opulent daughters, be happy, mustnít we?
after all, is inside my collar, my own at play
on your hip. Regardless of who we are, we are here,
more than compeer to any plumb pairing.
So though this be a quickening number, pray,
let us slow the fiddlerís ephemeral noise
not to a halt but close,
and (with the shutters rolled up on our Yule Tide)
allow these seconds to become our lives.
